Corralejo: the name means “small corral” where livestock was kept. Corralejo is an ancient fishing village with a modernised town centre and was the first touristic place on Fuerteventura to be developed. It still is one of the busiest tourist areas on the island, during the day and du-ring the night. You may split Corralejo into 3 main areas: the north with its old town centre and closest to the harbour, the centre that has been built during the 70’ties and the south which has been developed after 2000. The Old Town is a pedestrian area and the Music Square, Calle La Iglesia and Muelle Chico are host to many bars and restaurants. In the centre of the town you have the main street with a handful of short side streets which contain many shops, cosy bars and fine restaurants. Close to the Centre of Corralejo you have two small beaches which are ideal for children. In the South of Corralejo there are beautiful beaches with plenty of sports and leisure possibilities. The dunes (a national park) are world famous and are one of the must-see items of Fuerteventura. The island of Lobos can be visited to enjoy nature, tranquillity and the small beach.
El Cotillo: old port from the 17th century that now is a tourist area, which results in a particular atmosphere. There are 2 harbours, the old one is in the middle of the village where you have really good restaurants and the new one is at the south of the village, surrounded by restaurants. Please visit El Toston, the little fortress which occasionally houses art exhibitions by local artists. El Cotillo has beautiful beaches. The south beaches are a hot spot for surf freaks and the north beaches have a series of pretty lagoons which are superb for families. Some beaches further up north are visited by nudists (sorry, no pictures available).
Lajares: village between Corralejo and El Cotillo that has a local lace production which can be visited. From the road of Lajares to Majanicho you can start your walk to the Volcano “Calderón Hondo”. There is an important surfing and handicraft community in Lajares. Every Saturday there is an art and craft market in the town centre.
Villaverde: small agricultural village with a local museum of ethnic art “Rosalinda”. There are some good restaurants.
La Oliva: capital of the municipality “La Oliva” where you can visit the ancient military headquarters “Casa de los Coroneles”, an agricultural museum “Museo del Grano” and a nice church.
Tindaya: sleepy village with a nice beach and the sacred mountain “Tindaya” that can be ascended upon request. Other interesting places here are mountain “La Muda” and “Montaña Quemada” that both can be ascended too. All of them lead to superb views.
